Phonograms

Spalding is a language arts approach developed by Romalda Spalding, a teacher and author. The Spalding approach emphasizes teaching language through phonograms, or letter combinations that represent specific sounds in words.

The Spalding method uses a set of 70 phonograms, which are taught in a specific sequence. These phonograms include single-letter sounds, such as “a” and “b,” as well as multi-letter combinations, such as “th” and “igh.” Each phonogram is introduced with a specific motion or gesture to help students remember it.

Each phonogram is taught with a specific motion or gesture to help students remember it. For example, the phonogram “sh” is taught with a motion of placing the index finger over the lips, as if saying “shh” to someone who is talking.

In the Spalding method, students learn to read and spell words by breaking them down into their phonograms and then blending them together. For example, the word “ship” can be broken down into the phonograms “sh,” “i,” and “p,” which are then blended together to form the word.

By learning phonograms and how to blend them together, students are able to develop strong phonemic awareness skills, which can help them become better readers and writers.

The Spalding approach also includes a specific sequence of lessons to teach spelling and reading. Students learn to spell and read words by breaking them down into their phonograms and then blending them together.

Overall, the Spalding method is designed to provide a systematic and structured approach to language arts instruction, with a focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and handwriting.
